How it works

  1. Specialised centres

There are four centres for young people. At Zaans Medical Centre access is via mental health partners Youz or Check-In Genderzorg, not the GP.

  2. Puberty blockers

From around age 11 and the start of puberty (Tanner 2), with parental consent.

  3. Hormones

    Usually from 16.

  4. Surgery

Mastectomy from 16 after 1 year of hormones; other surgery from 18.

Policy

Health Council, 30 June 2026

The Health Council concluded that youth care is "carefully organised" and saw no reason not to offer hormones. 0–3.5% stop puberty blockers, over 90% continue with hormones. Recommendations: better documented assessment, national monitoring, more long-term research and a more active role for GPs and mental health care.
